Riot on the roof
Vernon Public Art Gallery 2009
Riot on the Roof began as a single event to showcase the non traditional forms of contemporary art such as performance, video and installations that often find less exposure in small cities like Vernon. Utilizing two floors and the roof of the parkade above the Vernon Public Art Gallery, a number of artists responded to the open call for submissions to exhibit in a one night, festival style event. The Rooftop was home to five widely different local bands including Leila Neverland, Jodi Peterson, Modern Folk, Aligator car crash and Cities Ablaze , while the lower floors included several video "theaters" with works by Michael V. Smith, Cato students, Mellissa Strezlic and others. Throughout the night the crowd expereinced performances by performance artist Chad Pratch and fire spinning from the Kinshira Fire troupe.
The night was an all ages event with over 600 people in attendance. Following the initial event in summer of 2009, the Vernon Public Art gallery recieved a grant for $4000 to do the event again in 2010 which was organizesed by VPAG summer student Kristy Baily and enjoyed another successfull year.
