Self Portrait
I think of these projects as "unfolded drawings". Portraits are the byproduct of an event between two people: one person looking at another person while creating a picture. Looking at a two-dimensional portrait on paper or canvass the the gestures and mark making allow us to imagine the actions of the artist as he or she created the work. It is a static object leaving the viewer to speculate at the events leading up to it's creation in an almost infinite variety of sequences and variations. The nature of video as a medium is to place events in a sequential order, one following the other to create a linear narrative.
Using two hand held digital cameras I created these videos by simultaneously filming both the the act of drawing as it unfolded on the page, as well as the person or object being drawn. Later, using final editing software I combined the two videos laying one over top the other. What you are seeing here are are stills from each of the videos. Click on the images to play or pause each slide show.
